AbstractEffective communication between a person and robot may de[end on whether there isexists a commne ground of understanding beteween the two. In two experiemnts modelled after a human-human studies, we examined how people fprmed a mental model of a robot'ds factua;l knowledge. Participants estimated the robot's knowledge by extrapolating from their own knowledge and from information about the the robot's origin and language. These results sugest that designers of robots must attend not onl;y to the social cues that robots emit, but also to the informnation that people use to create mental models of a robot. robot's social cues and behaviours maust conform to to peoples mental models of a robot's knowledge or capapbilities to allow correct assessment of the robnot's state. People make assumptions (uncounciosly?) of robot's knowledge on very small evidence of robot behaviour/information.
